Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of the real ear to dial difference (REDD) and real ear to coupler difference (RECD) in predicting the real ear SPL (RESPL). Subjects were included 25 adults (50 ears) with normal hearing. The REDD was obtained by sweeping pure tones (70 dBHL) with ER-3A insert earphone at 250-6,000 Hz and measuring these pure tones in dBSPL with the probe microphone (Fonix-6,500 CX) in the ear canal. The RECD was calculated the difference between the 2 cc coupler SPL and real ear SPL. Means of the REDD and RECD varied as a function of frequency but were approximately 13.4 dB and 4.9 dB with a standard deviation of ¡¾3.5 dB and ¡¾2.8 dB. Correlation coefficients of the REDD and RECD were respectively over 0.61 except for 750 Hz and over 0.81 except for 2,000 Hz. Therefore this study showed that individually measured the REDD and RECD can be used in clinical practice to derive a valid estimate of the real ear SPL when it has not been possible to measure directly.
